DIRECTOR’S FORWARD Come and join us as we celebrate nine years of promoting short film. Once perceived mainly as a calling card, now increasingly recognised as an art form in its own right, the short film is where new cinematic ideas are explored, innovations are made, challenges are overcome. Short film is where most feature filmmakers start out, where they formulate their ideas and develop their style. It is a world of possibility and opportunity as yet untapped. Kinofilm is committed to providing a platform for the best emerging and established filmmaking talent from home and abroad. Kinofilm is the UK’s leading short film festival, attracting filmmakers and industry professionals worldwide. In November this year, Kino will celebrate its10th anniversary. Major plans are already taking shape to celebrate 10 years of KINOFILM and consolidate Kino’s position as one of the North West’s most innovative culturally diverse events, hosted annually in the city of Manchester. We are proud to welcome the AMC Great Northern Cinema as our main partner venue on this year’s festival. Look forward to seeing you in at the festival. John Wojowski, Festival Director PROGRAMME INTRODUCTION Image From: Victim This year saw over 1300 films of all genres, submitted to the festival and the programming team went into overdrive, selecting almost 300 shorts for your viewing pleasure. Kino Latino, Kino Horror, Kino’s infamous Going Underground selection, and BlueFiRe!, our Black & Asian Film focus, all return, revamped and revitalised; our ever- popular North by North West Programme is being expanded to include 5 separate programmes, plus workshops and seminars aimed at encouraging the region’s burgeoning filmmaking community; and this year also sees the introduction of a series of themed programmes under the portmanteau heading Kino Tales. We hope you enjoy the festival. Steve Balshaw, Programme Manager Kinofilm reserves the right to make alterations to the programme without prior notice. FESTIVAL LAUNCH EVENT AND SCREENING International Perspectives ; Kino’s selection of international shorts programmes includes both cross-national collections (‘International Shorts’ - two programmes, and ‘International Student’), as well as nation specific line-ups presented in association with the key international culture centres in Manchester (‘Kino Latino’ - two programmes, ‘French Shorts’ - two programmes, and ‘German Shorts’. 4 Countries 1 Cinema The domestic shorts programmes combine a celebration of the finest UK shorts produced in the last eighteen months (‘Best of British’ - two programmes, ‘UK student’) with the best locally produced work from emerging and established talent in our expanded ‘North by Northwest’ programme (this year a whole day of screenings and professional events will be devoted to the local industry). BlueFiRe! ; Kino’s dedicated Black and Asian shorts programmes will be arranged to allow a comparison between the best British shorts (‘BlueFiRe! British’) and the most impressive talent from the rest of the world (‘BlueFiRe!International’) Outside In Reflecting Lens As cinema audiences for documentary films reach an all-time high, Kino presents the most challenging new documentary shorts from around the world. Inspired by the Medium: Kino has a long-standing tradition of supporting new filmmaking media. As digital technology revolutionises the industry, Kino offers a platform to the best and bravest of those revolutionaries. Going Underground: Camp, controversial, sexy and political: Our usual brand of quirky, off the wall, provocative and cutting edge new work from low budget film makers across the world who all share a defiantly “Underground” sensibility. Experimental Cinema at its purest, most primal state. Kino Tales: As a result of the success of the acclaimed ‘Kino Horror’ programme, the themed programmes in this years’ festival have been expanded to add a new, darker dimension to the festival and compliment the traditional shorts programmes. Kino will again explore the sinister side of short film with ‘Kino Horror’ and truly test the retinal resilience of the audience with ‘Kino Extreme’. Psychological themes of anxiety and alienation will be explored in ‘Neurotic Tales’. Strangeness and surrealism are the order of the day in the aptly named ‘Bizarre Tales’, while Bad Sex offers a down and dirty antidote to frictionless soft-focus erotica. Euro Cine In 2004, Kino became a member of the European Co-ordination of Film Festivals. In celebration of this, we present a special selection of new work from the European Union. French Programmes One and Two. Guaranteed to delight even the most jaded of Francophiles. A must for all film makers who have an eye for the fearcest competition. Spanish Programme. Spanish Cinema does not begin and end with Pedro Almodovar, Antonio Banderas, and Penelope Cruz. Discover why Spanish films are so popular with Manchester Audiences with this sizzling selection of shorts. AMC German Programme (In Association With the Goethe Institute) German Cinema is back on the international map. Kino is proud to introduce them to you. Several world premieres for very real reasons.
